A full moon resided over the Cro Dome this evening as the 4-3 Carencro Bears welcomed the 7-0 New Iberia Senior High Yellow Jackets in a District 4-5A showdown. First possessions for both teams ended in four downs, but a poor, wobbly Bear punt gave the Yellow Jackets good field position on their next drive. NISH failed to gain more than two yards and the kicker Colby Delahoussaye (5) nailed a 36 yard field goal for the first three points on the board. On the first play of the ensuing Bear possession, Brandon Bernard, who had a monster performance rushing over 120 yards, ran sixty yards to the Yellow Jackets’ twenty yard line. He would also run it in from the seven yard line for the Bears’ and the game’s first six. NISH converted a fourth and one but to no avail as the drive ended four plays later. Carencro’s Alex Thompson (5) and Brandon Bernard (4) both had explosive carries that ignited a late first quarter drive. Damian Ruben (29) ran it in for the touchdown from the 34 yard line to start the second quarter. The Yellow Jackets failed offensively once again, but the Bears dropped and recovered the punt on the Carencro two. NISH was able to push Damian Ruben (29) the opposite way into his own endzone for two easy points. Huge carries again from Brandon Bernard (5) set up a 20 yard touchdown run from Alex Thompson (4) for the Bears’ third consecutive touchdown. A combination of stellar defense from the Bears and struggling offense from the Yellow Jackets made for an embarrassing first half offensively for the otherwise powerhouse NISH. A blocked punt led to another Alex Thompson (5) touchdown at the end of the first half. Jalen Jones (9) and Zack Bourque (2) for the Yellow Jackets caught big passes late in the game to increase their score to 19. A NISH onside kick was recovered by Carencro. Showing no mercy, Damian Ruben (29) ran it in for the deepest cut of the night to blow up the score 50-19. That would be the final score as the Bears please their large homecoming crowd by derailing the surging Yellow Jackets.
