In what was arguably the most anticipated game of the end of the regular season in Acadiana, the Lafayette Lady Lions traveled across town to face the Comeaux Lady Spartans. Winner of the match would be one step closer to being crowned district champs. Lafayette scored the first two points of the night but Comeaux did not waste any time tying it at two. Each team fought extremely hard. There were lasting rallies that resulted in heartbreaking points for the opposing team. After Comeaux had taken the lead at 4-2, Lady Lions scored eight to push the lead to 10-4. Comeaux’s careful eye and daring dives brought their deficit down to one. Once it appeared Comeaux had found the will to tie and take the lead, Lafayette put their game in gear and catapulted their lead. Lady Spartans came back to life and tied the game at 19 and, after well played volleyball by both teams, took the set back into their own hands leading 21-19. Lafayette tied it back at 23, again at 24, then took a 25-24 lead. Another long rally ended in disappointment for the Lady Spartans who lost the first set by a score of 26-24. Second set began same as the first with a quick 2-0 lead for Lafayette and another quick resurgence from Comeaux to tie it at two. Just when it seemed the Lady Lions would dominate with a lead of six, the Lady Spartans refused to be denied and tied it at seven. The cliche “history repeats itself” proved to be very true tonight: Lafayette once again climbed to a high lead and Comeaux retaliated. Lady Spartans eased themselves within a comfortable deficit but could not ignite an already dying fire. Lafayette won the second set 25-16. Keeping with tradition, Lafayette scored the first two points and Comeaux scored the next two points of the third set. Comeaux was virtually unable to prevent Lafayette from jumping out to an early, strong lead. Although they played hard and with heart, the Lady Spartans could not keep playing from behind. Lady Lions were strong and smart all night long and at times the Lady Spartans simply had no defense. When the score was 18-14 Lafayette, Comeaux appeared to have found enough depth to push for a fourth set. As the Lady Lions neared 25, however, their will was too much for the Lady Spartans. Comeaux hurt themselves with multiple serves into the net and Lafayette took advantage of that as they won the set, and game, 25-19.
